Chronology of events during 2001



January 15, 2001
Once again, FACTS joined the October 22nd Coalition and other groups protesting criminal justice issues at the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in Los Angeles. Thousands viewed the parade on the mostly sunny day.

Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg puts forward bill to amend 3-strikes law

In protest of the 7th year of the California 3-Strikes law (enacted March 7th 1994), FACTS had a march and rally in Los Angeles and a candlelight vigil in the City of Orange on March 10th. Included were many speakers and many other organizations.

April 26, 2001
California Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg's Bill, AB1652, which would exclude drug possession cases from the Three Strikes law, was passed by the Assembly Public Safety Committee on April 24th by a 5 to 2 vote. Once again, FACTS members crowded the committee hearing and then had a rally outside the capitol building that included two busloads of people who traveled the previous night from So. California.

AB1652 moved to inactive status by Goldberg.

October 6, 2001
The 4th Annual FACTS Fundraiser Dinner in Los Angeles was a great success as many people attended and gave generously. Professor Erwin Chemerinsky, the keynote speaker, gave the crowd his perspective of the current state of the court system and their views' about justice and equality. The 2001 Key Honories of the Friends of FACTS Awards included Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, Rev. William M. Campbell, Maisie Chin, and Joe Klaas. Other people awarded at the dinner were Gloria Pulaski, Jim Strang, Vivian Moen, Gail Blackwell, Luis Garcia, Prisoners at R.J. Donovan Prison, Corcoran State Prison "B" Yard, Corocoran State Prison "C" Yard, and many of children who have given an effort at trying to change the 3-strikes law. Dec. 15th, 2001
About 50 to 60 people braved the cold weather and came out to the FACTS candle-light vigil in Los Angeles on Dec. 15th. Included among the press were the BBC and Univision. Many speakers spoke with sadness about the 3-strikes law, but a few spoke with guarded optimism concerning the recent 9th Circuit decision that ruled the law was "cruel and unusual punishment" for Leandro Andrade.
