Chronology of events during 2002



January 15, 2002
Possible initiatives for 2002 and 2004 announced.

January 21, 2002
Once again, FACTS joined the Martin Luther King Parade in Los Angeles by marching with the October 22nd Coaltion. It was a nice sunny day, and there were thousands of people lining the sides of the streets.

January 22, 2002
LA Times Editorial in favor of amending 3-strikes law.

February 7, 2002
Fed. 9th Circuit says two more 3-strike cases are "cruel and unusual punishment."

March 9, 2002
On March 9th, FACTS closed the streets of Westwood and then had a rally at the Federal Building. The demonstration was to protest the 8th year anniversary of the California Three Strikes law which had become effective on March 7th 1994. The crowd was estimated at between 250 to 300 people and there was a good deal of local news coverage present, as well as a news team from Canada. Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg talked about her current bill AB1790 and the prospects of it passing. She said that the people of California should pass her bill rather than wait for the court system to do it. One of the visual highlights of the march and rally was the construction of a cage with a tombstone on top identifying how the 3-strikers are "buried alive" under the current 3-strikes law. The weather was perfect and many motorists driving by honked showing their support for the demonstrators.

AB1790 passes Assembly Public Safety Committee.

April 1, 2002
US Supreme court agrees to take California 3-strike cases.

May 22, 2002
AB1790 is Held and Goes Nowhere. Realizing that she did not have enoungh votes for passage, Assemblywoman Jakie Goldberg held back AB1790 (proposal to put amendment of 3-strikes law on Nov. ballot) from vote on the floor of the assembly. In effect, the bill died.

Oct. 5, 2002
On October 5th, cars protesting the 3-strikes law drove from Los Angeles and Orange County through the streets in two caravans and met in Long Beach for a rally.

Oct. 19, 2002
FACTS participated in the PRUP Rally in Protests at Prisons Across the Country.

Oct. 26, 2002
On October 26th, while game 6 of the World Series was taking place, at Exposition Park in Los Angeles, people of all faiths joined together to send up a petition of prayer to ask God for favor in this very important decision that will be heard before the U.S. Supreme Court on Nov. 5th. Rev. Norman Johnson of SCLC led the group in prayer. Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky was the guest speaker. 60 min. II and 48 Hours were also filming at the event. Participating were the ACLU, FACTS, UNITY 2, Friends Outside, Human Rights Watch, Danza Azteca Cuauhtemoc & Inside FACTS Chapters and individual prisoners

US Supreme Court Hears Oral Arguments in Three Strike Cases.
