March 6th: Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg puts forward bill to amend 3-strikes law

The FACTS office received a call on March 6th verifying that Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg put forward a bill to amend the California 3-Strikes law.

The proposed bill--AB1652--called for allowing only "violent felonies" to count as the 3rd strike. Details were still being worked on, but it had to do with something that focuses on "substance abuse" and might not be retroactive. Obviously, Goldberg's office had to float around different ideas to the other Assemblymembers and see what might have a chance of passing.

[Please note: Although we had previously posted that Goldberg's office had originally submitted a broad sweeping bill that had additional amendments, their office called and informed us that they plan on submitting amendments to narrow it to the "violent felonies" for the 3rd strike as noted above. The exact details and wording of the amendments will probably flow through the process by the end of March.]
